Bed bugs prefer to feed on the
blood of humans, but will feed on other warm blooded animals too. Although not
known to carry or transmit any diseases, their bites can cause an allergic
reaction in some people.
Bed bugs can live up to a year
without a blood meal. When they do take a blood meal, female bed bugs can lay
up to 200 eggs.
Bed bugs were once thought of
as a pest of the past, but with an increase in global travel and the banning of
effective pesticides, they have made a remarkable comeback in the last few
years.
Adult bed bugs are about
3/8" long with flat, oval-shaped bodies and are easily visible to the
naked eye.
